There are many stories about how the moon came to be. There are myths from all over the world. Science has also tried to understand the formation of the moon. According to some theories, the moon is a product of a collision between the Earth and Mars creating a cloak of materials from both planets. It then solidified after a long period of time and became the moon. Humans have also explored the moon, if you have heard of Neil Armstrong, then you must have heard that humans were able to set foot on the moon. Up until now, there are still controversies regarding this event. Still, the important thing is as our technology becomes more advanced, we can explore outside the planet with the use of robots and collect data that may become useful to our lives.
Moon Mythology
Have you ever tried gazing at the full moon and see a silhouette of a woman? Because of this shadow, legends and myths have been told. Basically, the moon is mostly said as a feminine entity. Letâs talk about two stories one quite popular and another not so.
There is a famous story about the moon. It was created in celebration of the moon festival. A woman named Chang Er is married to a man named Hou Yi. Hou Yi was given a potion that can make him immortal like the Gods. Drinking the elixir would make him immortal and fly to the sky like Godâs. This was given to him as a present to shooting down nine suns that are killing the planet due to its hot temperature. Plants were dying, bodies of water are drying up and people are suffering from extreme heat. Even though Hou Yi wanted to become immortal, he did not consume the elixir because he does not want to leave his wife. He loves her so much that instead, he gave her the potion for safekeeping.
Hou YI was then celebrated by the people, and many wanted to learn archery from him. A student saw that the queen of heavens gave Hou Yi the potion of immortality. Because of his greed, he came to his masterâs house when he went out to hunt. Chang Er was the only one at home. She knew that she cannot fight a man so she decided to drink the elixir instead of giving it to the student. She immediately flew to the sky and wasnât able to even say goodbye to her husband. It was noted that Chang Er flew to the moon because it is the closest place to the Earth. After learning this, Hou Yi would always gaze upon the moon and he would see his beloved wifeâs shadow. For his love, he would offer Chang Erâs favorite food. This act is now celebrated as the moon festival.
Another story is about Mayari. Mayari is a demigod, one of the three daughters of the Bathala, Bathala is a version of Zeus or Odin in other mythology. She is the God of war. One day, Bathala went to rest for a long time. Miyari asked Apolaki, the sun, to rule over two worlds equally, but he refused and only led to one land. A war between two worlds erupted. Apolaki and Miyari fought each other resulting in the latter losing her eyes. This is the reason why the moon doesnât shine like the sun. Apolaki is the sun that rules over half of the day and gives way to the Moon, Miyari, at night. Because he relents his past mistakes, he gives some of his shine to Miyari as she rules over the night.
The symbolism of the Moon
The moon is considered to be a feminine entity. Like Mother Nature, that represents the life cycle. The moon also denotes the period of life. The phases of the moon show the stages of life form births, childhood, adolescence, and death. A Symbol of inner being like the two versions of the moon, there is the dark and there is light side. Resilience, the ability to shine even in the darkest part of the day. Scientifically, the moon has power over some natural phenomenon on water. The gravitational pull of the moon creates high tide to the place where it is closest to. For lovers, it signifies true love for someone who is far away and the depth of affection. It takes time and considerable effort to reach the moon and that equals the intensity of love that one is feeling. He or she is eager to go through all that hardships to prove their love.
Ways to Express Love
Like Christmas, love should be celebrated daily. But if your love language is giving gifts, you would go broke and run out of material things to offer. So how do some people express or celebrate love? Here are some ways.
Flowers
Simple and sweet. It may be cheesy and impractical to some but no matter how much a woman says she doesnât need or want flowers, deep inside, a simple, thoughtful act always warns a woman's heart.
Chocolates
Sweet or bitter? It does not matter. Chocolate makes people happy. One of the foods that release happy hormones like serotonin and dopamine. It also has an anti-aging effect. Amazing right? Love means happiness and so does chocolates.
Sweet notes
In the age of machinery where people can easily communicate via text or email, we seem to forget how to write using a pen and paper. A note saying I love you or a sweet reminder here and there like donât forget to have breakfast would continuously fan the fire of love between two couples.
Travel
It is said that you need to travel with your partner to know if you truly are in sync. A person's real character surfaces when subjected to uncomfortable events. A couple who explore the world together creates memories that money more than money can buy. It might be expensive and some would say that it is luxurious, but having to experience new things together, may it be in a god or bad way, creates a stronger bond than. Life will throw you some bumps here and there. You have to be with someone who can stay by your side even on these hard times.
Valentineâs Day
A day for lovers, a month full of love. Romantics still celebrate this event on the same day by having special dinner dates, traveling, or spending quality time with each other. Most of us have a hectic schedule most of the time. Valentine âs Day reminds us to give importance to the people we love and loves us. To set aside time and spend and rebuild and strengthen our relationship with our spouse or loved ones.
It is customary for males to offer gifts such as flowers, chocolates, and pieces of jewelry to women but in Japan, it is the women who give chocolates to the men. There are two types, one is to be provided for a man who she is sexually attracted to and there is another type to be given for platonic relationships such as friends and family members. The men would then reciprocate this gesture on the 14th of March, coined as the white day.
Qi Xi festival
Also known as the Chinese Valentineâs Day. This is celebrated one the month of August. It was observed in the past by showcasing womenâs weaving skills under the moonlight, food offerings such as fruits, and wines to worship the weaver fairy. At the present time, it is celebrated like the rest of the world by giving presents like flowers and chocolates. There is a sweet love story between a human and a goddess behind this festival. A demoted god in the shape of an ox showed his gratitude to a mortal for saving his life by acquainting him to a fairy, one of the seven daughters of the goddess of the Jade Palace. They then fell in love and secretly got married on Earth. She lived like a regular wife that tends to the farm and weave in her free time. The Mother found out about the union and took back her daughter to the heavens leaving her husband and children behind. The ox seeing the humanâs broken heart told the man to kill him and use his skin to fly up the heavens with his children. The man did as the ox said but the goddess immediately made a river to stop the two lovers from meeting each other. Magpies who were touched by the deep love between the two decided to create a bridge so the man can cross the river. The goddess then saw how deep the romance is between the two decided to let them be and live happily.
We have our own distinctive way of expressing our love to each other. The simplest and easiest way is saying the words. Three words in English. It is not hard to do for most people but for some, it seems complicated to express these in words. They would rather say it in other ways. As partners, we have to do our part in understanding how each one shows and receive love. Both might love each other to the moon and back but if one does not understand or appreciate one's deed of love, the act becomes useless and this will lead to misunderstandings.
A necklace is a type of accessory the sits close to our heart. Combined with a pendant that reminds us of the affection from our partners is a sweet and romantic way to express one's love. Like the moon to the Earth, even with great distance, the moon would always revolve around the Earth. Like a couple that meets halfway just to co-exist and be with each other even for a short period of time.
